SEPANG - Malaysia Airports reaffirms its commitment to passenger safety with comprehensive and intensive testing of the new Aerotrains at KL International Airport (KLIA). This critical phase ensures the system meets the highest safety and performance standards ahead of its service commencement in Q2 2025, subject to the necessary approvals from the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) and Ministry of Transport (MOT).
Initially planned as a three-year project which commenced in March 2022, it is now in the final Testing and Commissioning (T&C) phase where it undergoes comprehensive verification against rigorous safety, operational and performance requirements. Despite facing some challenges earlier, involving the energisation of the substation and track, the project is now nearing completion. The focus remains on achieving world-class standards, prioritising passenger safety and service reliability.
Dato’ Mohd Izani Ghani, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports, emphasised, “Passenger safety remains our utmost priority. As we approach the operational date for the Aerotrain, we are conducting mandatory trials and assessments to ensure the system operates seamlessly across all components and meets safety requirements. This project is critical to both Malaysia Airports and the country. It is in tandem with our goals to enhance passenger experience, and elevate KLIA's reputation as we prepare for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.”
The Aerotrain is currently undergoing 80 critical tests, including Dynamic Tests, Interface Tests and System Integration Test (SIT). The final test is the Fault Free Run (FFR) which requires the first Aerotrain to run for over 2,000km without any failures, and subsequently for the other two Aerotrains to run for 1,000km without any failures. These evaluations are conducted to ensure all safety, operational, and performance features meet stringent regulatory requirements. This will be conducted under the supervision of APAD to verify compliance and confirm the system’s readiness for approval and commencement of full operations.
Earlier today, Malaysia Airports hosted a media tour at KLIA, providing an in-depth overview of the Aerotrain project. Media professionals were given exclusive access to the Aerotrain's control room, where they gained insight into the system's sophisticated operations and monitoring processes. The event culminated in a live train test, offering a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the meticulous steps involved in validating and fine-tuning the Aerotrain system.
Alongside the Aerotrain Project, KLIA's extensive multi-phase transformation will enhance passenger comfort, modernise infrastructure, and optimise operations. Key initiatives include the major Baggage Handling System replacement, the introduction of self-service boarding pass clearance e-gates, a new children’s playground, upgraded baggage trolleys and push-assist wheelchairs, as well as numerous other passenger-focused services and facilities. These ongoing improvements are aimed at boosting convenience, efficiency, and overall satisfaction for all travellers at KLIA.
