SEPANG - Malaysia experienced significant aviation growth in 2024, marked by the addition of 12 new airlines, 16 resumptions, and 24 new destinations. KL International Airport (KLIA), the nation’s busiest international gateway, welcomed several international carriers, while regional airports also benefited from increased air traffic with new direct flights to destinations across Asia and beyond. This expanded network not only provided travellers with greater connectivity but also strengthened Malaysia’s position as a key player in the global aviation industry.
Among the 12 new airlines were Air Macau, Iraqi Airways, Turkmenistan Airlines, Cambodia Airways, Qingdao Airlines, AirAsia Cambodia, Loong Air and Air India, all operating from KLIA. New destinations connected to KLIA in 2024 include Almaty, Ashgabat, Baghdad, Chiang Rai, Lam Dong, Labuan Bajo, Jaipur, Nairobi, Nanjing, and Vientiane, among others. Overall, 73 foreign carriers and 6 local carriers (excluding freighters) now operate flights to 138 international and 31 domestic destinations within the Malaysia Airports network, reflecting the continuous growth of the nation’s aviation sector.
According to the Managing Director of Malaysia Airports, Dato’ Mohd Izani Ghani, “The encouraging performance in 2024 highlights the collaborative efforts of Malaysia Airports, airline partners, government agencies, and the tourism industry in positioning Malaysia as a premier destination. The addition of new airlines and destinations reflects growing confidence in Malaysia as a hub for tourism and business travel. Looking ahead to 2025, we aim to further enhance connectivity with the introduction of more than 10 new airlines, focusing on key markets in Asia and Europe. This strategy will help drive traffic growth as we prepare for Visit Malaysia 2026, reaffirming our commitment to connecting the nation to the world and delivering seamless travel experiences."
In 2024, Malaysia Airports’ network, including Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (ISGA), recorded over 135 million passenger movements, achieving 96.1% of 2019 levels. Within Malaysia, airports handled 93.8 million passengers, reaching 89.1% of pre-pandemic levels. International traffic continued its upward trend with 49.6 million passengers, or 93.1% of 2019 figures, despite challenges such as delayed aircraft deliveries and disruptions in maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services. The domestic sector also remained stable, recording 44.2 million passengers, or 85.1% of pre-pandemic levels. For December 2024, passenger traffic at local airports totalled 8.5 million (4.7 million international and 3.8 million domestic), marking an 11% increase from the previous month, driven by school holidays and festive travel.
ISGA continued its growth trajectory in 2024, welcoming 41.9 million passengers—an 16.7% increase from 2019. International travel was a major contributor, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 55.8% with 22.2 million passengers. Domestic traffic recorded 19.8 million, reaching 91.1% of 2019 levels. In December 2024, the airport recorded 3.6 million passengers, reflecting a 3.4% increase from the previous month, with 2 million international and 1.6 million domestic passengers.
KOTA KINABALU - Seramai 150 pelajar dari komuniti Kota Kinabalu telah menerima manfaat melalui program Ceria Kembali ke Sekolah, yang merupakan sebahagian daripada Program Tanggungjawab Korporat (CR) Malaysia Airports, MyAirportCARES. Dengan nilai sumbangan sebanyak RM87,000, program ini dijalankan di bawah salah satu daripada tunggak tanggungjawab korporat syarikat iaitu Pengukuhan Komuniti dan Belia Melalui Pendidikan. Ia bertujuan untuk memberikan motivasi kepada para pelajar agar menghadapi sesi persekolahan baharu dengan semangat yang tinggi dan kelengkapan yang mencukupi.
Pengarah Urusan Malaysia Airports, Dato Mohd Izani Ghani, yang turut hadir, berkata, “Pendidikan merupakan asas pembangunan negara. Generasi muda hari ini adalah pelapis pemimpin negara yang akan memacu Malaysia ke arah yang lebih gemilang. Oleh itu, bantuan ini bukan sekadar untuk melengkapkan keperluan persekolahan anak-anak ini, tetapi untuk menyuntik motivasi agar mereka terus berusaha dengan bersungguh-sungguh untuk mencapai kecemerlangan di dalam pelajaran mereka.”
Setiap pelajar telah menerima baucar membeli-belah bernilai RM400 untuk digunakan semasa program yang berlangsung di Imago Mall pagi tadi. Kerjasama dengan Yayasan MyKasih juga memperuntukkan tambahan RM180 setiap pelajar melalui kad pintar, membolehkan mereka membeli barang keperluan di kedai buku sekolah dari Januari hingga Mac 2025.
Pihak pengurusan tertinggi Malaysia Airports serta 35 orang sukarelawan dari kalangan wargakerja Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Kota Kinabalu turut mengambil peluang untuk beramah mesra dan menyantuni para pelajar tersebut. Kehadiran mereka membuktikan komitmen Malaysia Airports terhadap program ini di samping memberikan semangat dan sokongan moral kepada para pelajar untuk menghadapi sesi persekolahan yang akan datang dengan
lebih yakin.
Program sebegini turut diadakan di Langkawi pada Disember 2024. Sejak dilancarkan pada 2018, MyAirportCARES telah memanfaatkan lebih 4,000 pelajar di seluruh negara, menyediakan bantuan kelengkapan sekolah seperti pakaian seragam, beg, kasut, alat tulis, dan lain-lain, dengan jumlah keseluruhan sumbangan sebanyak RM1.2 juta.
SEPANG- Malaysia Airports urges passengers to plan ahead and make full use of smart airport facilities as passenger traffic is expected to surge from 20 December 2024, to 5 January 2025, coinciding with school holidays, Christmas, and New Year’s celebrations.
As the primary hub, KL International Airport (KLIA) anticipates a significant increase in both domestic and international passengers, with daily average passenger movements at Terminals 1 and 2 projected to reach 104,000 and 98,000, respectively, throughout the period. Airlines such as Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, and AirAsia collectively have scheduled about 30 to 35 additional flights daily, bringing the total to approximately 1,085 flight movements per day at KLIA.
Managing Director of Malaysia Airports, Dato’ Mohd Izani Ghani assured travelers that preparations are in place to manage the increased traffic, "We have bolstered manpower to strengthen operations and are ready to ensure smooth passenger flows and reduce waiting times at key touchpoints. Simultaneously, we have introduced enhanced safety, security, and hygiene measures to provide a stress-free airport experience for all.”
Passengers are encouraged to utilise online or smart check-in kiosks, e-boarding gates, and the MYairports app, for a faster and more convenient experience. Arriving early is also recommended to allow ample time for check in, clear immigration, and explore the diverse range of shopping and dining options available prior to boarding. Passengers are also reminded to maintain cleanliness when using airport facilities.
In November 2024, Malaysia Airports registered a total of 7.7 mi lion passengers across its local network, comprising 4.1 mi lion international passengers and 3.6 mi lion domestic passengers. KLIA contributed the highest number of passengers at 4.7 mi lion or 61% of the overall performance. Meanwhile, Langkawi International Airport (LIA) recorded the highest growth in international traffic, 23,273 passengers, up from 18,227 or an increase of 28% from the previous month. This growth was driven by the opening of new international routes and an increase in direct flights, making Langkawi a more attractive travel destination.
Meanwhile, passenger traffic at the Group’s Turkish asset, Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (ISGA), handled 3.5 mi lion passengers in November, accounting for 31% of the Group’s global traffic of 11.2 mi lion. ISGA saw 1.9 million international passenger movements and 1.6 million domestic passenger movements, consistent with the performance recorded in the preceding month.
SEPANG– Malaysia Airports has pledged RM1.4 million to provide continuous assistance to communities affected by the recent floods. Thus far, the relief efforts have centred on areas surrounding three airports within its network Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Alor Setar, Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Kota Bharu, and Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu.
As part of this initiative, Malaysia Airports has supplied 1,000 modular tents to each of these airports and to the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA). These tents will be deployed at flood relief centres to provide temporary shelter for displaced individuals. In addition to providing monetary contributions, Malaysia Airports has worked with GLC/GLIC Demi Rakyat & Negara (GDRN) and other related agencies in distributing essential supplies to affected communities, including hygiene kits and non-perishable food items. Moving forward, the relief package will also include bedding sets, as well as cleaning equipment to further support immediate recovery efforts.
