KUCHING – Malaysia Airports launched its fourth annual “Green Day” programme at Kuching International Airport, a two-pronged employee engagement activity that aims to inculcate environmental awareness among employees while promoting staff camaraderie.
Employee engagement ranks high on the company’s agenda as it has a direct correlation to organisational excellence. Hence, for the first time ever, the Green Day programme was held outside of Kuala Lumpur so that employees who are not based at the corporate office will have the opportunity to engage further with the management team.
Green Day is also a platform for the company to reinforce its commitment towards achieving a carbon-neutral growth which is in line with its aspiration to create environmentally friendly airports. The Green Day initiative is led by Malaysia Airports’ Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) unit, under the Human Resources Services Division with staff from Kuching International Airport helping out specifically for Green Day 2015.
In his speech, Y.Bhg. Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports said, “The aviation industry has evolved so much over the last few decades and this evolution has challenged us to run our company more successfully on sustainable principles. In order for us to remain relevant and competitive in this environmentally conscious economy, we must constantly look for solutions that allow us to conserve the environment in all our operations and to become a socially responsible organisation.
At the same event, Malaysia Airports was inducted into the Malaysia Book of Records as the “First Airport Operator Accredited as National Dual Training System (NDTS) Training Centre and Company for Public Transport Terminal Operation Programme”. The NDTS programme is a new approach to human capital development in creating a skilled workforce. It is an industry-oriented programme where 70% of the required knowledge is transmitted via hands-on training sessions.
Exhibition booths were also available, featuring organisations such as Natural Resources & Environmental Board Sarawak, Forestry Department, Department of Environment, Sarawak Tourism Board (Eco Tourism), Sarawak Biodiversity Centre, Mady Organic and Natural Food Store, Council of the City of Kuching South, Sarawak Rivers Board, Suti Dikan Company, MARDI Sarawak, and Malaysia Airports’ own Sustainability Unit. Other exciting activities included for this year’s Green Day were traditional Sarawak games “Ngajat Lesung” and “Bamboo Dance” tournament.
Through Green Day, Malaysia Airports hopes that its staff will discover more about the challenges that the natural world faces and learn what sustainability means to them and their workplace. It also presents a refreshing and stimulating change of scenery especially to the desk bound employees.
