Malaysia Airports Sets Its Sights On Becoming The Global Leader In Creating Airports Cities

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia Airports launched its five-year business plan, Runway to Success 2020 (RtS2020), today which charts its business direction for 2016 to 2020. RtS2020, with its ultimate goal of turning Malaysia Airports into a global leader in creating airport cities, was jointly launched by the Malaysia Airports’ Chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Abdullah and Managing Director, Datuk Badlisham Ghazali in Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur earlier this afternoon in front of approximately 150 guests comprising investors, government agencies, business partners, financial analysts and members of the media.

RtS2020 is a follow-through from Malaysia Airports’ earlier five-year business plan, Runway to Success 2010-2014, which had seen Malaysia Airports become the world’s second largest airport group in terms of number of passengers handled (2015: 112.0 million) and one of Malaysia’s top two GLCs in terms of total shareholder returns over a period of ten years (> 500%).

According to Tan Sri Wan Abdul Aziz, the plan is centred on two main thrusts – which is to strengthen its core business; and to expand and diversify its operations. In doing so, Malaysia Airports will focus on four strategic priorities – elevating KL International Airport (KLIA) as a preferred ASEAN hub; enhancing total airport experience for all its stakeholders, developing Aeropolis; as well as increasing its international footprint.

In his presentation of the plan, Datuk Badlisham explained that RtS2020 will see Malaysia Airports transform itself into a service leader, an ecosystem manager and a value creator. This is part of a journey that the company needs to take in order to ensure relevancy in an increasingly competitive environment and sustainability of its business performance.

In line with the evolution of airports around the world, airport operators need to transform beyond its traditional role of merely managing and operating airports. In realising the goals of RtS2020, Malaysia Airports will seek to proactively create value through smart partnership and synergistic collaboration with its business partners in order to achieve mutual benefits especially in the development of Aeropolis, the ultimate airport city. Functioning as a catalyst within the Aeropolis ecosystem will thus enable the company to unlock and extract maximum value from its available land bank.

The elevation of KLIA as a preferred ASEAN hub is a crucial element to the Aeropolis development. Thus, it is also important for Malaysia Airports to continue to enhance the services and connectivity at its flagship airport KLIA, and to reimagine the total airport experience for all its stakeholders by embedding a customer-centric culture in airport operations in order to be a world-leader in service quality and excellence.

Datuk Badlisham had also elaborated that the RtS2020 business plan is perfectly aligned to the country’s various development agenda. As such, its success will allow Malaysia Airports to enhance further its position as a key economic enabler to the nation.
