klia2 Ready to Receive Airasia's Family Of Airlines on 9 May

Sepang, 7 May 2014 - Since its opening on 2 May, klia2 has handled a total of 33,000 arriving and departing passengers for both international and domestic flights with close to 300 aircraft movements. klia2 continues to chalk a smooth operation into the sixth day with Malindo Airways, Lion Air, Tiger Airways International and Cebu Pacific Airways.

Malaysia Airports is now looking forward to receive AirAsia and its family of airlines in the second phase of migration to klia2. The second phase of migration with AirAsia's family of airlines will commence on the evening of 8 May through midnight of 9 May, when all their flight arrivals and departures will be completely transferred to klia2.

Malaysia Airports is working very closely with AirAsia to assist them in the migration and several meetings and simulation trials have been held to prepare for the transfer. Just as the other airlines have managed to move their operations smoothly from LCCT and KLIA to klia2, its expected that AirAsia will be able to do the same, notwithstanding its larger operations and fleet. Malaysia Airports will give AirAsia its full support in this migration to ensure its success and minimal inconvenience to passengers.

The core operational systems at klia2 such as the check-in system, baggage handling system and the passenger boarding bridge (aerobridge) continues to operate efficiently with no issues encountered so far.

klia2 is equipped with 128 check-in counters and 55 self-service check-in kiosks using the Common User Passenger Processing System (CUPPS). With the flexibility of the CUPPS, airlines can maximize the utilization of check-in counters as they are able to operate the check-in system from any of the available counters. This will help mitigate congestions even at peak hours provided the counters are manned adequately.

klia2 is also equipped with the fully automated inline baggage handling system that will reduce the queuing time required to screen the check-in baggage separately, unlike the practice at LCCT. Passengers can now drop off the baggage at the check-in counters while they are checking in their flights, or at the baggage drop counters if they had checked in online. This provides more convenience for passengers and ease the passenger processing flow for the airlines.

We are confident klia2 is equipped with all the services and facilities to meet AirAsia's operational requirements and take it to the next level of growth. Passengers of AirAsia will also enjoy a much more comfortable and spacious terminal with enhanced facilities and services, as indicated by the positive public response during the klia2 Open Day and by passengers whom have since travelled through klia2. To date klia2 offers a total of 219 shops comprising of retail and F&B outlets of which 103 are within the klia2 terminal and 116 are at Gateway@klia2 for the enjoyment of the travelling public. These offerings will further improve as more shops open over time.

As with any major migration of operations, there may be hiccups faced by AirAsia however Malaysia Airports is fully committed to support and assist in every way possible. 'We have done extensive Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) trials involving all the stakeholders since February 2014, and klia2 is now running well,' said Malaysia Airports.
